In a sign of the times, Playboy magazine — which has prided itself on full-frontal nudity since its debut in 1953 — has revealed a sneak peek of its first non-nude issue, set to hit stands Feb. 12.
Model Sarah McDaniel, 20, who rose to fame using social media, graces the groundbreaking March cover, shot by Theo Wenner, to resemble a Snapchat selfie — part of the aging magazine’s efforts to appeal to a more millennial leadership.
“A year and a half ago, we relaunched Playboy.com as a safe-for-work site, and traffic skyrocketed 400 percent,” Playboy chief content officer Cory Jones tells The New York Times. “The average age of our visitors dropped from 47 years old to 30. It showed how the brand can still resonate.”
Also part of the magazine’s redesign is the first non-nude Playmate to grace the centerfold, model Dree Hemingway, great-granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, as Miss March. While staying true to its provocative roots, the magazine’s all-new look also includes a new approach to photography, including unretouched images, and a roster of new contributors including James Franco.
