“For Jill: May your family find some measure of solace during this pain. That one man could cause so much damage is astounding, but tragically true. The bad man did this to us both,” McGowan wrote in an Instagram post. “May you find peace on the astral plane. May you find serenity with the stars.”
In the statement, Messick’s family said she was “victimized by our new culture of unlimited information sharing and a willingness to accept statement as fact.” Both McGowan and Weinstein were called out by name in reference to a 1997 incident at the Sundance Film Festival in which the actress claims she was raped by Weinstein.
Messick’s name was included in a statement by Weinstein’s attorney, Ben Brafman, on Jan. 30 in defense of his client against McGowan’s claims. In Brafman’s statement, an email from Messick to Weinstein was referenced that claimed Messick told the disgraced producer that McGowan’s accounts of the events in Sundance were “consensual.”
In Messick’s family’s statement, they claimed that Messick “became collateral damage in an already horrific story,” and that she “never knew any details until recently” of McGowan’s encounter when the actress elected to make them public. They further said that Messick, who was a “very junior person in a management company hierarchy” at the time, “raised the red flag with the heads of her firm” when McGowan told her of her encounter with Weinstein.
The statement claimed that “seeing her name in headlines again and again” led to Messick’s suicide, that it “broke” her. “What makes Rose’s inaccurate accusations and insinuations against Jill ironic was that she was the first person who stood up on Rose’s behalf, and alerted her bosses to the horrific experience which Rose suffered,” the statement read.
