The Heart of Robin Hood, a swashbuckling makeover of the familiar fable, with music performed onstage by American roots band Parsonsfield, will play a limited engagement on Broadway next year.
The production begins previews at the Marquis Theatre on March 10, officially opening on March 29, and is scheduled to run through Aug. 23. Casting is to be announced.
Developed by British playwright David Farr and Icelandic theater artist Gisli Orn Gardarsson, the play reimagines in athletic action, comedy and music the path by which Robin Hood and his band of merry men found their mission to steal from the rich and give to the poor, with a nudge from do-gooder Marion.
It was first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2011 and more recently had a well-received run at American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Mass., last December.
Joel Brown, theater critic for The Boston Globe, wrote: “By the time of its final glorious romantic tableau, it will be a rare theatergoer who’s not won over.”
Farr and Gardarsson previously collaborated on a widely traveled stage adaptation of Kafka’s Metamorphosis. Farr is currently directing his first feature, The Ones Below, for BBC Films.
Walter Bobbie, who directed the long-running Broadway revival of Chicago, will serve as creative consultant. Lead producers are David Mirvish and National Artists Management Company.
The limited-engagement booking gives the Nederlander Organization an interim tenant at one of its largest Broadway houses, prior to the start of previews on Oct. 5, 2015, of the Gloria and Emilio Estefan bio-musical On Your Feet! That show, which has a tryout run in Chicago next summer, officially opens on Nov. 5.
The Heart of Robin Hood will follow another limited run at the Marquis, of the touring magic show The Illusionists — Witness the Impossible, which begins previews Nov. 26 for a Dec. 4 opening.
