Adapted from Natalie Babbitt’s popular children’s novel about an 11-year-old girl who encounters a family with the secret to eternal life, the musical has struggled to attract audiences from the start. Despite a weekly gross potential of $1.1 million, it has failed to hit $350,000 even once during its eight weeks on the boards.
The production began previews March 31 at the Broadhurst Theatre and officially opened on April 26. It will have played 28 previews and 39 regular performances when it closes on Sunday.
While the family-friendly show generated some positive reviews, including one from The New York Times, it scored only a single Tony Award nomination for best costume design. The strong word of mouth producers clearly were counting on has failed to kick in.
Tuck Everlasting features a book by Claudia Shear and Tim Federle, music by Chris Miller and lyrics by Nathan Tysen.
The show represents a rare miss for director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who staged the blockbuster hits The Book of Mormon and Aladdin, both of which are still going strong, and whose 2015 production of the musical comedy Something Rotten! has entered its second year.
