If you’re going to have a fundraiser in Denver, you can’t do better than having John Elway as honoree.
On Oct. 2, the Children’s Diabetes Foundation honored the former Denver Broncos quarterback (and current general manager) and his wife, Paige, with its High Hopes Tribute Award at the 2015 Carousel Ball at the Hyatt Regency Denver.
“John Elway is the biggest star in Colorado,” said the foundation’s founder Barbara Davis. “It be would like having a dinner in Los Angeles honoring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The people in Denver adore him.”
The event was emceed by David Foster, who also served as music director, and included a performance by Usher, whose seven-year-old son Usher Raymond V is battling Type 1 diabetes and, with his father’s help, read the prayer before dinner.
A surprise guest at the 1,100 person reception was current Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who usually avoids making public appearances.
“He gets mobbed,” Davis said. “This football team is a really a religion in Denver.” The event raised $1.1 million.
