Costume designers are known for keeping a well-stocked emergency kit for wardrobe malfunctions. Besides double-stick tape, button extenders, lint rollers, colored pens and safety pins, TV and film style experts also require their own essentials for dealing with long hours on set, including days with glaring sun during, or for keeping busy hands nourished in between spritzes of hand sanitizer.
Seven top Hollywood costume designers — all nominees at the 2021 Costume Designers Guild Awards, which will be held virtually on April 13 — reveal the best sunscreens and tinted moisturizers that they rely on during pre-production and shoots and while on hunts for fashion finds.
Check out the top skincare picks below from the creatives behind the looks seen in the films and television shows Mulan, Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar, Birds of Prey, Euphoria, I May Destroy You, Da 5 Bloods and Emma.
CGDA-nominated costume designer Lynsey Moore — up for excellence in contemporary television for the I May Destroy You episode, “Social Media Is a Great Way to Connect” — relies on “good moisturizer and sunscreen for being outside all day.” One drugstore product that’s earned a permanent spot in her kit is Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer, which protects the skin with SPF 30 and, thanks to the company’s Total Soy Complex, helps to smooth and even out skin texture and tone.
Da 5 Bloods costume designer Donna Berwick (nominated for a CDG award for excellence in contemporary film), says Eucerin’s SPF 50 anti-aging sunscreen performed well while shooting the film in Thailand, “where it was very hot, some days over 100 degrees.”

Trayce Gigi Field, a CDG award nominee for Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar, says of Tom Ford’s Soleil Glow Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15: “I love a good tinted moisturizer with SPF. [This] gives you a little color and protects you from the sun.”
Costume designer Erin Benach, a CGDA nominee for excellence in contemporary film for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), protects her face with Milk Makeup’s breathable SPF 30 tinted moisturizer. The silicone-free, coral reef-safe formula feels lightweight and leaves the skin moisturized and dewy.
French clean beauty label Caudalie’s Anti-Wrinkle Face Suncare with SPF50 is another favorite of Moore’s. The coral reef-friendly cream is vegan and free of parabens and mineral oils, and soothes the face while blocking UVA and UVB rays. It also contains organic grape water (the brand’s hero ingredient) and antioxidants that combine to balance and hydrate the skin.
Euphoria costume designer Heidi Bivens says she uses Barcelona-based brand ISDIN’s SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen, which features a grease-free formula with vitamin E and plankton-derived enzymes that help repair sun-damaged skin.
Mulan costume designer Bina Daigeler, up for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and for a CDG award for excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film, is partial to Chanel’s Les Beiges tinted sunscreen with SPF 30. The formula promises sheer, lightweight coverage that protects the skin from the sun while leaving a natural and luminous finish.
Alexandra Byrne, nominated for a CDG award for excellence in period film and an Academy Award for best costume design for Emma, says she loves Chantecaille’s SPF 45 sunscreen primer. The oil- and cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, and lightweight fluid is formulated with soothing cherry blossom and white tea extracts, and wrinkle-softening and firming carnosine. It’s great for daily use in every type of climate, including humid ones.
