Edward Enninful’s first cover for Vogue UK has arrived.
British model and activist Adwoa Aboah is featured on the cover, photographed by Steven Meisel. The glam portrait, which features Aboah in a multi-colored headscarf, metallic eyeshadow and glossy red lipstick, is reminiscent of Vogue covers from the ‘90s.
For Enninful’s debut cover, he opted out of cover lines teasing inside stories and instead featured a list of famous names, including Zayn Malik, Cara Delevingne, Gwendoline Christie, Zadie Smith, Naomi Campbell, Sadiq Khan, Steve McQueen, Millie Bobby Brown and more British boldfacers, presumably who are in the mag or contributing. The December 2017 issue is “dedicated to Great Britain and the creatives who represent it at home and abroad,” says Enninful.
The cover shoot is accompanied by an interview between Enninful and Aboah, who discuss “the importance of diversity in fashion and how they define being black and British in the year 2017.”
Not only is Aboah a Vogue UK cover star, she’s also a contributing editor for the glossy, alongside Campbell, Kate Moss, Grace Coddington and Pat McGrath.
Enninful was named British Vogue‘s new chief editor in April after his predecessor, Alexandra Shulman, announced in January she was stepping down after 25 years. Many in the industry were thrilled about Enninful’s new role, including Campbell, who pointed out the lack of diversity in the mag’s staff under Shulman’s leadership and said she was “looking forward to an inclusive and diverse staff now that @edward_enninful is the editor.”
The Vogue UK December issue hits newsstands Friday.
