Anne Hathaway graces the cover of the July issue of Harper’s Bazaar, opening up on everything from her Oscar hosting gig (and the scathing reviews), to her new film One Day.
Despite being dubbed as “one of the worst Oscar telecast in history,” critics generally commended Hathaway for her high energy and effort during the 2011 Academy Awards. Co-host James Franco did not fare so well with his laid-back, lethargic approach.

“I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned standing next to [her],” Franco told David Letterman in a March appearance on The Late Show.
“How did I take it?” Hathaway responds to the comment. “I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil. I called him, and we e-mailed a bit.”

Despite the harsh criticism following the broadcast, Hathaway’s head is still held high.
“In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she says. “I met great people, wore beautiful clothes. And I got to put on a show. I don’t see a downside. Anyone who disliked my personality probably disliked my personality before the Oscars. “
The actress, who burst onto the scene in The Princess Diaries, has made it a point to take on more complex characters through her career. Contrary to her natural bubbly personality, she has played somber roles in Brokeback Mountain, Rachel Getting Married and Love & Other Drugs.

This summer, she’ll star as the scarred Emma Morley in One Day. Based on the David Nicholls novel, it follows two college classmates over 20 years of love and betrayal.
“Every girl feels she’s Emma Morley,” Hathaway explains. “There’s so much growth that happens in your 20s. To me, the character felt very authentic to that experience.”
Hathaway is currently filming Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, in which she will play Catwoman.
