The 24-year-old, who is nominated along with the rest of the Lady Bird ensemble for best cast in a motion picture, revealed to The Cut that she dug deep into her closet and whipped out her high school prom dress for Sunday evening’s show. She revealed that it was mom Shay, who accompanied her on the carpet, who encouraged her to wear the formfitting black Kay Unger gown.
“I put it on and it fit, surprisingly maybe better than it did in high school! I looked at myself and I was like, WHAT!? and my mom and her best friend were just laughing so hard, like, ‘You have to wear it! There’s just no other dress that would be better,’” she told The Cut‘s Anna Silman.
Not only was the gown a perfect fit (in more ways than one) for the black-tie event, but it was the perfect homage to Lady Bird, which has its own twist on the classic coming-of-age high school prom scene. “It’s just a gorgeous dress, and I love how my character’s story ends at the prom, so like, for the first time I’m going to an awards show as a nominee with the cast, it’s like, ‘You gotta wear your prom dress, girl, and honor Julie,’” added Feldstein.
The actress styled the look with a dark smoky eye, silver earrings and side-parted waves. We’re sure her character, Julie — and Lady Bird herself, for that matter — would approve.
