The fifth annual Hollywood Beauty Awards will honor the stylists and designers behind Black Panther and A Star is Born, among others, on Feb. 17.
The HBAs, founded by journalist Michele Elyzabeth, on Thursday announced the honorees and nominees for the upcoming awards show, to be held at Avalon Hollywood.
Black Panther costume designer Ruth E. Carter will be honored for outstanding achievement in costume design and styling, while stylists Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout (Lady Gaga), Alexandra Mandelkorn (Janelle Monae) and Wendi and Nicole Ferreira (Chris Pine) were each nominated for the Ruth E. Carter Styling Award.
The prize for outstanding achievement in hairstyling will go to Lori McCoy-Bell (A Star Is Born, Westworld and The Mule) and Larry M. Cherry (Roman J. Israel, Esq., Fences and The Equalizer).
Other hairstyling award nominees include Chris Appleton (Jennifer Lopez), Frederic Aspiras (Lady Gaga), Lee Rittiner (Mila Kunis), Felicia Leatherwood (Issa Rae), Lacy Redway (Tessa Thompson) and Miles Jeffries (Mariah Carey).
The makeup nominees are Daniel Martin (Elisabeth Moss), Patrick Ta (Olivia Munn), Sarah Tanno (Lady Gaga), Ernesto Casillas (Eve), Etienne Ortega (Christina Aguilera) and Yolonda Frederick (Ciara).
When it came to styling Golden Globe nominee Lady Gaga for her film debut in A Star Is Born, her styling team Amador and Eerebout told The Hollywood Reporter in a joint statement: “We wanted to channel some old Hollywood glamour but also let her be her, each look was so different. … We definitely took a more classic approach but made sure that there was still an element of fantasy involved. We wanted everything to be very true to her and her artistry.”
They said that the most magical moment on the film’s press tour was her premiere in Venice, wearing the pink feather flamingo dress from Valentino. “The backdrop, the rain and lightning, the energy — it was so special for all of us to experience together. It was her very first movie premiere and the excitement and energy surrounding the event was electrifying,” explained the stylists.
Carter previously spoke with THR about her work on the mega-hit Black Panther (up for best motion picture drama at the 2019 Golden Globes). “It definitely reclaimed a lot of identity in [the Afro-punk] movement, and that was the thrilling part of it, too, so we definitely wanted to put that in,” she said. “But we also wanted to put royalty and respect and honor and just elevate the images of African-Americans in a story that could be told — that was positive, had a positive message, talked about building bridges, not barriers.”
Radio personality Lisa Stanley will host the HBA gala, which benefits the Helen Woodward Animal Center of San Diego County.
