“Every part of this is new for me,” said Sofia Boutella when she arrived at Cartier’s party Tuesday night. The co-star of The Mummy and Atomic Blonde had just taken a New York Water Taxi to Governors Island, where the jeweler was hosting a black-tie dinner to celebrate “Resonances de Cartier,” its latest collection of haute joaillerie, those one-of-a-kind stunners that demonstrate a house’s ultimate talents in handcraft and its ability to source exceptional diamonds and gemstones.
Boutella’s night of firsts included the high-jewelry pendant she was wearing, a diamond-embellished medallion suspended on a long chain of 18-karat white gold. “I’ve never worn high jewelry before, but I’ve also never taken a boat from Manhattan before, either,” said the Algerian-born actress. “Everything feels like a surprise tonight.”
That sense of anticipation is exactly what Cartier intended in planning the evening, which took place in a special-event space that offered a pristine view of the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Cartier president and CEO Cyrille Vigneron reminded guests that Lady Liberty and Cartier shared common interests. “The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, and of course we also have a miniature version in Paris, and they echo each other,” he offered while explaining the collection’s “Resonances” theme. “Resonance is a word usually used for sounds, which echo and vibrate, but stones vibrate with an energy as well, and cutting them brings out that energy and sparkle. And New York is such a vibrant city — everything that happens here resonates throughout the entire world.”
Sofia Coppola, Diane Kruger and Carey Mulligan (wearing a diamond and emerald necklace from “Resonances,” paired with a velvet Dior haute-couture dress) were among the A-listers invited for the seated dinner by Blue Hill chef Dan Barber, followed by entertainment by Andra Day and DJ Grandmaster Flash. Meanwhile, every guest, it seemed, possessed a Cartier anecdote connected to a special occasion. Jason Wu bought a Tank, the iconic watch that’s celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, as a 30th-birthday present for his husband, Gustavo Rangel, while Carolyn Murphy owns a Tank that once belonged to her grandmother. “Cartier also gifted me with a Tank a few years ago that my daughter has her eye on, and I bought her a Love ring for her 16th birthday,” the supermodel said.
Kruger joked that she heard she could keep the diamond Panthere earrings she had paired with her red chiffon Giambattista Valli gown (the friendly side-eye from a PR person standing by told a different story). In her own jewelry choices, does Kruger consider herself a minimalist or maximalist? “The older I get, the more I consider myself a jewelry maximalist,” she said. “I never wore any jewelry when I was in my 20s, but in the last 10 years I have enjoyed buying things for myself. For me jewelry is sentimental: You don’t buy it because it’s fashionable; you buy it and wear it because it connects you to a memory.”
“Resonances de Cartier,” together with a selection of other high-jewelry and archived pieces, will be shown to private clients at Cartier’s Fifth Avenue flagship until Oct. 21, when the exhibition opens to the public. Through Oct. 29, attendees can view more than 400 pieces, while the flagship’s third floor will feature the “Cartier Atelier,” a demonstration of handcraft techniques showcasing artisans brought from the Paris workshops for the occasion.
It’s the first time the house has offered up both its high jewelry and the talents of its craftsmen for public enjoyment. If attendees are anything like Wu, the exhibition is sure to be a hit. “I love anything that sparkles,” the designer said. “When it comes to big diamonds, I can’t look away.”
