Usually A-list actresses use nothing but expensive makeup from Chanel, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, etc.
But when we heard that Great Gatsby star Carey Mulligan’s Grammy look included pricey products from Tom Ford, Laura Mercier and Anastasia as well as affordable items from Avon’s young makeup line mark, we sat up and took notice.
Makeup Artist Fiona Stiles explained the actress’s Grammy face to THR: “Carey’s Lanvin suit was strong and sexy. But rather than go the androgynous route with her hair and makeup, I kept her look feminine and understated. I gave her a matte smoky eye, defined brow and a ‘popsicle stained’ mouth. Together, these elements lent quiet sophistication to the look.”
First, Stiles prepped Mulligan’s skin with Tom Ford Illuminating Primer ($75). Then she used Koh Gen Doh Maifanshi Foundation in #113 ($65) and Laura Mercier Secret Concealer in #2 ($22).
She illuminated her skin with mark’s Touch and Glow Warm Shimmer Cream Cubes All Over Face Palette ($16), the lightest color in the palette, applying it down the bridge of her nose and on her cheekbones.
Stiles set the makeup with Laura Mercier Translucent Powder ($32 – $35) and defined her brows with Anastasia’s Brow Wiz in “Medium Ash” ($21) and set them with Anastasia’s Clear Brow Gel ($22). “It’s so important to set the browns,” she says, “it finishes the face!”
For her eyes, Stiles lined her top lashes with mark No Place to Run Longwear Eyeliner in Jet Set ($9). Then she dusted her eyelids with mark I-mark Wet/Dry Eye Shadow in Tobac ($7), blending the color up past the crease.
She added another layer of mark No Place to Run Eyeliner to make the lash line look lush and dense. And she lightly smudged the shadow under the lower lashes to softly define the eyes. The final touch was a sweep of Lancome Virtuose Mascara in Black.
On her lips, Stiles used mark’s Make It Rich Lip Color Crayon in Peony ($11) and blotted her lips “to create a stained effect.”
