Christian Louboutin is celebrating Mexican craftsmanship with his latest design project.
The French designer, best known for his red-soled shoes that have been worn by practically every celebrity, has launched the Mexicaba handbag, a tote he designed in collaboration with the artisans of Taller Maya, a foundation that works to preserve traditional, local craftsmanship and ensure the long-term economic empowerment of Mayan artisans.

Louboutin collaborated with the artists to create one-of-a-kind bags made from colorful handwoven cotton panels, Mayan embroidery and bone and wooden beads painted with motifs of mythical wild beasts.
The inside is lined with traditional Day of the Dead sugar skulls that have “turned into happy ghosts that keep an eye on your belongings,” said Louboutin.
Just in time for Cinco de Mayo, the Mexicaba bag is now available at Christian Louboutin boutiques and christianlouboutin.com for $1,490. Ten percent of the proceeds from sales of the Mexicaba will be donated to support Taller Maya.
