When you’re a fashion designer, a “successful” awards season can come at a cost.
For New York-based designer Christian Siriano, who dressed Kelly Ripa, Janet Mock, Laurie Metcalf and Whoopi Goldberg for the Oscars red carpet (that’s not counting all of the after parties, where Janelle Monae, Amy Adams, Rachel Bloom and Holland Taylor were spotted in his designs), that cost was upwards of $50,000 — and that was for the FedEx bill alone.
“It’s so much money to make these custom things and send them around the world,” Siriano told Michelle Collins on her Sirius XM daily show, The Michelle Collins Show. “I mean it can be $2,000 to overnight a large box to L.A.” The designer added that his team “probably sent about 100 dresses” from New York to Hollywood for the big day.
When Collins incredulously asked whether or not the stylists offered to pay for the costs, Siriano replied, “Most don’t have a budget for shipping.” Siriano’s husband Brad Walsh, who joined the designer on Collins’ show, added, “The reason that [stylists] say they don’t have a budget for shipping is because they’re pulling 100 dresses.”
Indeed, during The Hollywood Reporter‘s Stylist Roundtable, image makers revealed that though they are pulling several dresses for their clients to choose from, they often personally lose money during awards season due to other unavoidable costs.
Jeanne Yang, whose dapper clientele includes Jamie Dornan and Scott Eastwood, explained that studios pay $1,000 per red carpet look, but “then we deduct our expenses: shipping costs, paying assistants and tailoring, and it costs up to $1,500 to $2,000 per look.”
Zendaya and Mary J. Blige’s style guru Law Roach, added that for stylists, awards season is ultimately about the end game. “We take these jobs, make less money, put ourselves in the hole, so we can make it to that magazine.”
