Frazer Harrison/Getty ImagesNEW YORK — Christine Baranski will take a break from lawyering as Diane Lockhart on CBS’ The Good Wife to appear in a brief run of On Your Toes, directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle (Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway).
The dance-heavy 1936 show by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, with a book by George Abbott, is the final entry in the 20th anniversary Encores! season, which presents semi-staged concert versions of vintage musicals. It will play for seven performances May 8-12 at New York City Center.
Throwing together gangsters, vaudevillians and a Russian ballet troupe, On Your Toes was the first to integrate classical dance into the popular Broadway musical format. It includes the standards “Glad to Be Unhappy,” “There’s a Small Hotel” and the renowned “Slaughter on Tenth Avenue” ballet, originally choreographed by George Balanchine.
Baranski will star alongside Kelli Barrett, Walter Bobbie, Jeremy Cohen, Randy Skinner, Shonn Wiley and Karen Ziemba, as well as New York City Ballet principal dancer Joaquin De Luz and American Ballet Theater principal Irina Dvorovenko.
Bobbie’s long association with Encores! includes directing the series presentation of Chicago, which transferred to Broadway, where it remains the longest-running musical revival in history.
Baranski is a Tony Award winner for Neil Simon‘s Rumors and Tom Stoppard‘s The Real Thing. She last appeared on Broadway in 2008 in the hit farce Boeing-Boeing. Her previous Encores! credits have been in stagings of Promises, Promises and Follies.
