Stars Layer on the Gold Jewelry at the VMAs

If Britney Spears’ performance at last night’s VMAs wasn’t enough of a throwback for you, here’s another late ‘90s fad that made a return appearance: layered gold bling. 

Stars including Kim Kardashian, 2Chainz and Diddy took the “more is more” approach for the flashy affair, piling on gold pendants and shiny rings with earnest.

For her part, Kardashian decorated her decolletage with two bright gold necklaces, the first a triangular pendant and the second a chain affixed with two gold coins. The effect complemented her Spanx-chic vintage black John Galliano dress and wet-hair look.

Diddy took us right back to the Puff Daddy era with three layered medallions hanging in the center of his chest. As anyone will tell you, heavy gold pendants pair best with a shrunken kimono jacket, velvet smoking slippers and round sunglasses, as demonstrated by Diddy himself.

Rather ironically, 2Chainz’s was wanting for actual chains, instead choosing to sport his bling on his knuckles with six rings competing for space on his hands. More layered bracelets, a Gucci headwrap, workman boots and transparent oval sunglasses topped off his look.

Best new artist nominee Desiigner took on the no shirt trend, choosing to cover his bare chest with three slim necklaces and a thick gold chain. 

Moral of the story? Bling (and Britney, depending on you ask) is back.
