This story first appeared in the August 10 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
There’ve been just a few rare sightings of disgraced ex-Dior designer John Galliano since his February 2011 debacle — but his first Hollywood sighting was at the Sunset Tower’s Tower Bar restaurant on the evening of July 21. He arrived, wearing a kilt over shorts (typical) and blond ringlets, with former LVMH exec Katherine Ross, who now works with Balenciaga, and is also the wife of LACMA’s Michael Govan.
Galliano was far from inconspicious – he ran into Diane Kruger, with whom he exchanged lavish niceties both in French and German. After he left, nearby observers told Kruger that Galliano was raving about how great she looked, which made the fashion-loving actress and newly minted name on Vanity Fair‘s best-dressed list — beam. The next day, Galliano, with longtime Parisian partner Alexis Roche, visited L.A. friends, dropping the hint that Roche would like to style celebs and that they’re looking for an L.A. apartment, since the designer has finished his long stint in recovery.
This comes on the heels of both L.A. And N.Y. fashion people buzzing about YSL’s new creative director Hedi Slimane wanting to be based out of L.A, (after he’d relocated here from N.Y. for a few years), rather than Paris, and that an entire team from YSL will be starting an L.A. outpost-atelier in the next few months. Seems like Hollywood is about to be the Paris of the west.
