President Donald Trump is defending wife Melania’s choice of footwear in a new clip released Friday from Mike Huckabee’s interview with him, which airs Saturday on TBN.
The first lady got flak for wearing five-inch stilettos as she was boarding a plane en route to Corpus Christi, Texas, to tour the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which devastated the city in August.
Huckabee brought up Melania in the interview, praising her “empathy” and calling her one of Trump’s “greatest assets.”
Trump agreed with the former Arkansas governor and defended her in the show issue, saying his wife simply “out of respect for the White House, wants to look good” and “puts on formal shoes, high heels” to go to Texas. He added that she had sneakers with her to change into.
When Melania landed, she traded her stilettos for a pair of white sneakers that appeared to be Adidas’ Stan Smiths. She also changed out of her silky bomber jacket for a sporty white zip-up, which she paired with black trousers and a baseball cap reading “FLOTUS.”
While many criticized her initial footwear choice, Trevor Noah jokingly defended her, saying, “In Melania’s defense, she lives in a permanent disaster zone, and that’s what she always wears.” Noah also didn’t see why this was a topic of conversation at all at the time when the attention could have been geared toward the missile that North Korea launched over Japan. “People weren’t talking about the nuclear missile that Kim Jong-un tested, because Melania Trump apparently did something much worse. She went to Houston wearing high heels,” said Noah, before adding, “Here’s the thing, I don’t know why anyone should care what anyone wears when they’re on their way to help people. Who cares?”
For Trump’s part, he says, “She took tremendous abuse. But the good news is, the people understand it.”
