Out with the old and in with the new.
Former model Elin Nordegren, the ex-wife of Tiger Woods, has unleashed a bulldozer on her oceanfront mansion after purchasing the property for a reported $12.3 million last year. According to the Palm Beach Post, Nordegren has abandoned plans of a remodel and decided to build a new house on the lot instead.
Built in 1932, the 17,000-square-foot house boasted two stories, six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, an in-ground pool and elevator. The now vacant lot sits in a gated community in North Palm Beach, FL.
“It was a beautiful place, incredible landscaping, fantastic ocean frontage,” said Realtor John True. “I heard that the original plan was to renovate. But once they started, they decided to tear it down.”
Not all was lost in the demolition, however. Prior to the destruction, Nordegren gave Habitat for Humanity of Martin County permission to remove tens of thousands of dollars worth of cabinets, fixtures and hardware, according to People. “Elin could have had a garage sale and made a lot of money. But she wanted everything to go to charity,” said Dan Reedy of Onshore Construction and Development.
“It [the house] wasn’t build to the South Florida wind-loading codes of today that were put in place because of the hurricanes. We had an architect and a structural engineer out here and everyone agreed that it made more sense — structurally and economically — to tear it down and start over,” Reedy said of the decision to tear down the property.
“When we pulled out the windows, the bugs were everywhere,” he added, explaining how termite and carpenter-ant infestations were discovered. “To rebuild that house would have been ridiculous.”
Local officials, who requested to remain anonymous, told the Post that Nordegren and her two young children, of whom she has sole custody, are staying in the San Remo condominiums while her new home is being built.
Nordegren, 32, and Woods, 36, finalized their divorce in August 2010. The Swedish born beauty made headlines again in July, when reports surfaced of a new relationship with investor Jamie Dingman.
