Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper is expecting a child with husband Michael Koman. The actress shared the big news on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday but didn’t reveal the sex of the baby as Fallon gushed over Kemper’s belly.
“You’re the first one to bless him or her,” she said.
Kemper told Fallon that she was pregnant while shooting Kimmy Schmidt. The actress stars in the Netflix series as a woman who, after 15 years of living underground with a doomsday cult, adjusts to starting a new life in New York City.
“It didn’t really affect filming until the very end,” said Kemper. “We had a table read, and I saw that my character was supposed to be on a roller coaster, actually the Rip Ride Rockit [which Fallon once rode with Kevin Hart]. It was still very early on, but I felt like a pregnant lady on a roller coaster is not ideal.”
Kemper went on to share what happened after she broke the news to her boss Tina Fey (whom she joked she broke the news to before she told her mom).
“Because it was so early on, we decided ‘oh we’ll just tell people that I have a back injury and that’s why I can’t ride the roller coaster,'” said Kemper. But she admitted that it was hard sticking to the plan.
“I could not act like I had a back injury. Someone said, ‘Oh, what’s wrong?’ and words escaped me: ‘I sprained my spine.’ I’m a bad liar. I kept forgetting I had one, so I would do things someone with a back injury can’t do. They’d yell ‘lunch’ and I’d leap up and cartwheel to catering. You can’t do that. At the wrap party, I completely forgot. I was dancing. My friend, she said, ‘How is your back?’ I’m like, ‘It’s OK.’ … It was terrible. I think everyone saw right through it.”
