When you’ve played Wicked‘s Elphaba’s as many times as Jackie Burns has — the big-voiced belter holds the record for most performances of the part on Broadway, and is currently doing the role at L.A.’s Pantages Theatre until Jan. 27 — you learn a thing or two about how to take care of your skin. Here, Burns shares her beauty secrets.
I’ve played the role of Elphaba longer than any other actress on Broadway. I’ve performed the role over 1,300 times. With eight performances each week, that means I spend close to 30 hours every week “going green,” as we say in the Wicked biz. If you do the math that adds up to being green over 4,000 hours of my life.
To get me from human to witch, the makeup artist utilizes paint brushes to apply two different green products. The first is Chromacake in Landscape Green by MAC followed by a TV Paint Stick by Kryolan (#511). They then use purple eyeshadow and blush to define my features. Lastly, they apply a medium green lipstick for Act One of Wicked and then black lipstick for Act Two.
They make the lipstick adjustment to address Elphaba’s evolution from naive girl to a young woman who has embraced her own identity. But it’s not just lipstick: The makeup artist draws in my eyebrows darker, they define my cheekbones and utilize smoker eyeshadow.
Of course, what goes on must come off. To get the bulk of the makeup off every night I use Pond’s Dry Skin Cream and Trader Joe’s Micellar Makeup Remover Towelettes. Then I hop in the shower and use Neutrogena Liquid Cleansing Wash with a back scrubber scrub brush. Once I get home, I actually shower again to get whatever green remnants that remain.
As you can imagine, that much makeup can take its toll. To keep my skin healthy and glowing, some of my favorite products are Desert Biological’s Anti-Aging Essential as it is nourishing and hydrating, but won’t clog my pores. Trish McEvoy’s Beauty Booster Eye Serum because it’s very soothing and never irritates my eyes. I also love Beauty Booster Advanced Repair Retinol Eye Cream and M-61 Vitablast C Serum by BlueMercury.
Sometimes you just have to treat yourself. So, especially on the weekends when I get “green” and “un-green” twice in one day, I love using GLAMGLOW Thirstymud Hydrating Treatment Mask. Additionally, though you wouldn’t necessarily think of it as a “beauty product,” I drink Pedialyte Electrolyte Solution (Grape) as it’s the fastest way to rehydrate.
When I do have a night off, sometimes I like to hit the town — and I want to remember what Jackie looks like! On those occasions, Anastasia’s Modern Renaissance Eyeshadow Palette eyeshadows are beautiful and do a great job of highlighting my eyes. I also use Anastasia Brow Definer and Brow Powder (Medium Brown) as they go on smoothly and blend well. I’ve been using L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara (Original Black) since I was in high school as it delineates my eyelashes without being overpowering. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil (Smoke) is also a go-to favorite of mine.
So there you have it — now you can look like Elphaba on and off the stage. And don’t forget to moisturize! It’ll keep your skin defying gravity.
