Jussie Smollett is making the rounds at New York Fashion Week, hopping from the Hood by Air and Altuzarra shows on Sunday to Jeremy Scott on Monday.
While sitting front row, the Empire actor, known as Jamal on the hit Fox drama, told Pret-a-Reporter that he loves “that Jeremy Scott doesn’t give two shits and does what he wants to do.”
“I grew up as a kid loving Cross Colours,” said California native Smollett, referring to the brand Carl Jones launched in L.A. in 1989 that made “clothing without prejudice” (the slogan appeared on every piece of apparel). “It’s funny, because he’s kind of taken that vibe and spun it in his own way. It’s exciting. He’s a really sweet guy too.”
Smollett is familiar with Scott’s work thanks in part to the designer’s Moschino creations for Empire‘s Cookie (Taraji P. Henson), who donned a patchwork denim jacket with gold leather trim during season two. Smollett’s co-star Bryshere Y. Gray is also a fan, having sported two eye-catching jackets by the designer at last year’s Teen Choice Awards.
Though the actor appreciates Scott’s quirky and colorful creations, his personal style is much more tame.
“Simplistic and clean” is how Smollett describes his fashion sense. “I go where I go with it, do what I want to do. For me, I respect fashion as an art form so much, but I don’t take clothes and the wearing of my clothes too seriously.”
