Selena Gomez is single-handedly trying to bring itty-bitty sunglasses back into fashion. At least, that’s the way it looks from her latest Instagrams.
Gomez has been spotted wearing the style during the Asian leg of her Revival tour, where she’s also been rocking her brand new bangs and denim/mesh digs by Sami Miro, the designer better known for being Zac Efron’s ex. You might say that she “revived” the vintage oval shape — popularized by ‘90s R&B legends like Aaliyah and early ‘00s darlings including Britney Spears and Carmen Electra — which Ray-Ban currently stocks in a multitude of mirrored metallics for just $175.
But the shades are more than just a part of her onstage costume; the 23-year-old has been spotted sporting the style while out and about, too, replacing the super round style that has been a celeb favorite this summer.

And it’s not just the small, skinny frames that Gomez is trying to make happen again. The singer is also responsible for bringing transparent, rosy-tinted lenses back into the mainstream. (Because Bono couldn’t do it all on his own.)
The tinted shades and slimmer frame beg the question: Do they actually protect peepers from the sun?
So far, fellow trend-setter Kendall Jenner has also been spotted in skinny frames, however she dons them with less frequency than Gomez. Her yellow-tinted pair from earlier this summer gave us major Kate Hudson circa Almost Famous vibes.

And you know it’s a certified trend when Rihanna gets involved. The singer wore the oval style while onstage at OVO Fest, pairing the skinny shades with the Vetements x Manolo Blahnik hip-high boots. Her own Dior sunglasses have a slimmer frame, though they’re a bit boxier than the ‘90s favorite.
One thing’s for sure: Even if the style makes a comeback, no one will ever look as cool as Aaliyah back in 1997.
