Saturday night’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. v. Conor McGregor “Fight of the Millennium” in Las Vegas started with a style showdown.

Inspired by his Irish roots, Conor McGregor’s walkout look was created by bespoke menswear designer David August. His cape was an Irish flag, a piece the Irish boxer hasn’t worn in a professional fight since 2005. He paired it with white boxer shorts made from high-tech fabric embossed with leather side panels. The logo-emblazoned waistband was the perfect promo for his upcoming fashion line with the designer, dubbed August McGregor.

In the opposite corner, Mayweather wore a custom Philipp Plein ultra-luxe crocodile robe — and a full-face ski mask, natch. Commemorative T-shirts are already available on Plein.com, marking the beginning of a multiyear partnership between the fighter and the German designer.
The style showdown between the two flamboyant fighters has been months in the making.
At gum-slinger McGregor’s first media face-off against Mayweather in July, the MMA fighter was wearing an expertly tailored, custom David August suit, emblazoned with a discreet “Fuck you” pinstripe.

Boxing fans have been waiting with bated breath to see how the fight shakes out. Since McGregor is an MMA fighter (meaning kicks, sitting, etc. are legal), devotees are curious if he will stick to the rules of boxing. Demi Lovato sang the national anthem to open the contest, and Charlize Theron, Jeremy Piven, Jerry Bruckheimer, Mike Tyson, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez and Lebron James and his wife Savannah Brinson were among the stars in the seats.
There’s more on the line than who’s best-dressed. Both boxers are guaranteed to earn a minimum of $100 million, but the winning purse depends on Showtime’s pay-per-view sales. At $99.95 a pop, the sky’s the limit — providing plenty of money for these two self-professed style influencers to maintain their eye-popping wardrobes.
