Let’s face it: Ruth Negga is a makeup artist’s dream. “She has a doll face. Gorgeous skin, freckles, big, beautiful eyes, lovely lips,” muses makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who prepped the Ethiopian-born, Irish-bred beauty for her awards-season debut. “She is young, she’s beautiful, she’s modern, but yet she has a classic face.”
Playing up the Loving star’s shimmering sequined Louis Vuitton ensemble (styled by Karla Welch) and ‘50s inspired do by Vernon Francois, Inglessis put the emphasis on Negga’s complexion using Chanel products. To achieve the actress’ ethereal glow, Inglessis layered two separate foundations, starting with Sublimage Le Teint Cream Foundation in 5, followed by Perfection Lumiere Velvet Smooth-Effect Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in 70. Rosy cheeks were accomplished using the quartet of shades found in Exclusive Creation Coco Code Blush Harmony, including a light sweep of the gold shimmer to amplify Negga’s cheekbones.
And you can’t talk about the star’s dreamy look without mentioning her smoky purple eye: “We went for a top-heavy smoky look, meaning no color on the bottom,” explains Inglessis, who created the look by dusting the lids with Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow in New Moon and adding dimension with the burgundy-hued Quadra Eyeshadow in Tisse Cambon in the outer corners and eye crease, plus a hint of rose gold in the inner corners. A winged lash line and several coats of mascara (Le Volume de Chanel in Noir on top lashes and Inimitable Intense Mascara in Rouge Noir on bottom) added the finishing touch to this winning look.
