Designer Elie Saab — he of the masterful silk mousseline, beaded, pleated, chiffon, tulle gowns and cocktail dresses — who always shows his ready-to-wear and couture collections in Paris, finally gave his very first U.S.-based fashion show on Nov. 12 at Neiman Marcus’ second floor (where his collection is sold). The presentation was held to benefit The Blue Ribbon group, a women’s charitable and philanthropic organization that is involved with L.A.’s Music Center (Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Ahmanson Theatre) as well as children’s charities.
So why there? “Mr. Saab wanted to do something to give back and to aid children,” said a spokeswoman. He showed his spring 2015 collection, which was shown at February’s Paris Fashion Week, featuring striking deep V-necked gowns in lace and a stunning blue-green hue that could turn out to be the awards season color of 2015. We saw plenty of options in there for Saab devotees Angelina Jolie, Beyonce and a whole host of Oscar and Globe nominees.
On the night following his show, Saab held a dinner at Beverly Hills’ Il Cielo, a classic Italian experience with a beautiful glass-topped garden, chandeliers, truffle pasta — and more white flowers than at most weddings. And it was chockablock with celebs in the designer’s finest: Emily Blunt in a black lace jumpsuit from resort 2015; Hailee Steinfeld in a teal long-sleeve cocktail dress from his fall 2014 ready-to-wear; Inherent Vice star Katherine Waterston in a black short-sleeve structured cocktail dress from prefall; Ellen Pompeo in a white tailored blazer and trousers from spring 2014; Lily Collins in a black romper from spring 2014; as well as Jaime King, Jena Malone, Ashley Madekwe, Ahna O’Reilly and Haley Bennett all in Saab stunners.
The room also was filled with major stylists: Ryan Hastings (who arrived with Waterston), Jessica Paster (with longtime client Blunt), Karla Welch, Ilaria Urbinati, Elizabeth Stewart, and Wendy and Nicole Ferreira — all of whom have been seen on THR‘s annual power stylist list — also were taking in the festivities, champagne, truffles and the kickoff to both the holidays and awards season.
