Harry Connick Jr. Returning to Broadway

Harry Connick Jr. will be returning to Broadway this fall in a new production of On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, it was announced Tuesday.

The Tony nominee will star in the reimagined production as the lead, which will feature a new book by Peter Parnell based on the original book by Alan Jay Lerner. Burton Lane wrote the original music and Lerner penned the lyrics.

Michael Mayer, who helmed Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening and American Idiot, reconceived the musical and will direct.

On a Clear Day centers on Dr. Mark Bruckner (Connick Jr.), a psychiatrist and professor, who unknowingly takes on the case of his life with David Gamble, a quirky florists’ assistant. While he puts David under hypnosis to help him quit smoking so he can move in with his boyfriend Warren, he discovers what he believes to be David’s former self: a self-possessed 1940s jazz singer Melinda Wells.

Liza Lerner joins Tom Hulce, Ira Pittelman and Broadway Across America’s John Gore, Thomas B. McGrath and Beth Williams as the producers.

On a Clear Day opened on Broadway on Oct. 17, 1965 and starred Barbara Harris as Daisy Gamble and John Cullum as Dr. Mark Bruckner, who were both nominated for Tonys. Vincente Minnelli adapted the musical into a film in 1970, with Barbra Streisand and Yves Montand.
