Less than a month after leaving Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane seems to be on the move. The designer and photographer is not only about to become bicoastal, with a new home in New York, according to Document Journal, but he also appears to be considering his options when it comes to his career.
WWD reported that Slimane was spotted at the Doha, Qatar, offices of Mayhoola for Investments, a fund that controls Valentino and has interests in Anya Hindmarch. Word is that, according to market source, he may have discussed funding of a new line of his own with Mayhoola. It’s worth noting that in 2000, Slimane discussed the launch of an eponymous label under Gucci Group, but wound up at Dior Homme instead.
This year already has had quite a few designer moves, with Anthony Vaccarello taking over for Slimane at Saint Laurent and Francisco Costa leaving Calvin Klein. Karl Lagerfeld is rumored to be leaving Chanel, too, and there has been speculation Slimane could replace him. In an excerpt from Document Journal shared exclusively on The Business of Fashion, the L.A.-based creative discussed his ahead-of-its-time Diary and his plan to rediscover NYC.
“I haven’t been spending enough time to really document it for decades, so maybe I’ll do more things in New York,” said Slimane. “I don’t see the point in me having a place there if I don’t do anything with it — I have to transform it into something creative. I have a little studio — a portrait studio.” Time will tell if he’s working on a new line, but at the very least, it sounds like we can expect some new photography from the designer.
