Megan Thee Stallion enjoyed a night of firsts at Sunday’s Grammy Awards: It was her first appearance at the music industry’s biggest night. She took home three trophies, for best new artist, best rap song and best rap performance for “Savage” featuring Beyonce. And she was the first female rapper to win best new artist in more than 20 years.
She did it all in one of the most-discussed looks of the evening, a custom tangerine Dolce & Gabbana gown and shoes, paired with diamonds by Chopard. Here’s how the look came together, according to her glam team.
The dress: “We were blessed with a few options, but when we put on the Dolce & Gabbana dress, we knew we had found our perfect red-carpet look,” says stylist Eric Archibald (@ericarchibald) of the strapless tangerine-hued gown with thigh-high slit and oversized bow in the back. “Our inspiration was Old Black Hollywood glamour, and the dress fit that inspiration perfectly, and the color is outstanding. The dress was the perfect look for Megan’s first Grammy Awards.”
Megan noted that her favorite part of the gown was the bow, telling her team “I feel like a gift.” On her Instagram, she called herself a “gabbana girl.”
The accessories: In addition to custom-made shoes by Dolce & Gabbana, Megan also wore jewelry featuring more than 220 carats of diamonds by Chopard, including a necklace from the brand’s Red Carpet Collection, which featured 91.70 carats of diamonds set in 18-karat white gold.
The beauty: Megan’s glam look started with hair by Kellon Deryck (@kellonderyck), who explained that they “decided to do a romantic, whimsical updo that embodies Old Hollywood glamour. It came together after seeing the dress and understanding that framing her face in a classic updo would be the best way to compliment the whole look.”
For her makeup, Priscilla Ono (@priscillaono) opted for “a bronzy and fresh look,” she said, “to keep it beautiful, since the dress color was so vibrant. We decided to go more neutral, [and] golds and bronzes look great on her skin.”
The beauty look was finished with nails by manicurist Coca Michelle (@cocoamichelle) in a custom nude shade in Megan’s signature lipstick shape. “The lipstick shape is a long, tapered nail with a taper at the tip,” Michelle explained. “It came about when Megan and I first worked together. I thought the lipstick shape fit with her quirky personality. She loved it, and we have been using it ever since.”
The performance: Dolce & Gabbana also designed the custom looks Megan wore onstage to perform “Body” and “Savage,” starting with a nude-illusion bodysuit embellished with Swarovski crystals and topped with a feather cape. Los Angeles-based designer Bryan Hearns oversaw the creative direction and fit of both this look and a caged, corseted bodysuit, entirely encrusted in Swarovski crystals, for the final look of the performance.
For the TV performance of “WAP” where she joined Cardi B, Megan wore a custom L.A. ROXX mirror robot bodysuit and corset.
