Who else but Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the closest incarnation the fashion world has to entertainment impresario Walt Disney himself, could get Chance the Rapper, Diplo, Laverne Cox, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph and more to come down to Disneyland on a school night?
They did just that on Wednesday, bringing the stylish set from L.A. to Toon Town for their Opening Ceremony label spring collection runway show, just the second fashion show ever held at the Anaheim theme park. (The first was in 1978, and titled, “The Evolution of the American Woman,” which sounds endlessly fascinating.)
There were Hollywood stars in the seats, marching band-members on the runway, and churros at the after-party (yum), but nothing could compete with guest of honor Mickey Mouse posing for pictures like the OG celebrity he is. (Not even the cool kids can pass up a photo op with Mickey.) The show was a kickoff for the Disney mascot’s 90th birthday global celebration, “Mickey the True Original,” that will last all year, so he was feeling particularly spry. Minnie was on hand, too–and both were dressed in OC, natch.
“I’ve never been to Disneyland before, this is my first time,” said Cox, clad in a varsity jacket and dress from the brand. The limited-edition Disney collection is in stores and online as of today.
“I’ve been one time before—Ariana Grande brought me last year,” said celebrity stylist Law Roach, who was soaking up the scene after the show and looking for the two rides—Gadget Go Coaster and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin—open after-hours to the 500-plus guests.
Starting just after 9:30 p.m., after the park had closed, the runway show was held around the land’s Mickey Mouse and Roger Rabbit fountains. Leon and Lim have moved to the see-now, buy-now model, so the men’s and women’s collection they showed is available now, including in their La Cienega Opening Ceremony store. They showed a casual-cool range that looked suitable for the surf and skate environs of SoCal, including denim mini-dresses worn with white cowboy boots, stripe crochet knits, dolphin-graphic print T-shirts, color-block windbreakers and bucket hats made in collaboration with outdoor apparel brand Columbia, and glitter sandals done with Birkenstock.
For a finale, they showed their super-fun (and on-trend) sport-meet-glam take on Disney merch, including graphic Mickey-print off-shoulder jersey dresses, cropped T-shirts and sweats, novelty patchwork sweaters, a faux fur Mickey silhouette print jacket and mini-skirt, varsity jackets and more, which run $45 to $700.
“Doing something at Disneyland we’ve dreamed of for years,” says Leon, a self-described mall rat who was raised in the Valley but now lives in New York. “Growing up, I even made my own Mickey Mouse bow tie and cummerbund for my prom.”
A fashion discovery zone, the first Opening Ceremony store bowed in New York City in 2002, followed by locations in L.A. and Asia. In addition to designing their own Opening Ceremony label, and the LVMH-owned Kenzo, Leon and Lim have collaborated on limited-edition product over the years with dozens of heritage brands, including Pendleton, Stetson, Reyn Spooner, Birkenstock, Columbia and now Disney, earning a reputation for being able to turn old into hipster gold.
Tight-knit with the Hollywood community (and repped by WME-IMG), they often bring a performance aspect to their fashion presentations, whether it’s collaborating with visual futurist Syd Mead of Blade Runner fame on hovercrafts for a runway set, or tapping Portlandia‘s Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen for a political passion play to get out the vote.
After the show, guests lingered to ride the rides, listen to the DJ and eat hotdogs, popcorn and cheesy-good pretzels with their vodka sodas, taking advantage of ample Instagram ops with the Mickey ears gifted to all. Even the curmudgeonly Armisen was overheard saying of the experience, “I loved it.”
It really is the Happiest Place on Earth.
