In case you missed it, Instagram announced a major milestone on Tuesday: The social media app has a whopping 500 million users.
Of the half a billion double tappers, nearly 300 million are active on a daily basis — contributing to the 4.2 billion likes that occur every single day.
There’s no question that Instagram has had a dramatic impact on the way that the fashion industry operates, altering everything from the way brands advertise to the current shakeup of the fashion calendar itself.
To celebrate Instagram’s landmark, we’ve rounded up the 10 most followed fashion brands — but perhaps more surprising than the names that made the list are those that didn’t: Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Givenchy, Calvin Klein (whose most recent campaigns have made a big push toward the millennial audience) and Balmain (the Kardashian favorite) are noticeably absent.

10. Versace: 6M
Thanks to some hip-hop shout-outs through the years, Versace has become one of the most universally known luxury labels. The Italian fashion house’s Instagram account features a healthy mix of celebrity portraits, behind-the-scenes snapshots and jewel-encrusted aviator shades.
9. Valentino: 6.8M
Maison Valentino may be known for its ethereal, embellished gowns, but the brand knows how to create some edgier content, too. For its accessories campaign for the Rockstud collection, Valentino cast fashion photographer Terry Richardson (or at least, his tatted arms) to star in the campaign.
8. Burberry: 6.9M
Burberry keeps its feed fresh with images of some of Britain’s most beloved style icons, including Suki Waterhouse and Cara Delevingne, as well as the beloved Beckham boys. The fashion house even hired the eldest Beckham son, Brooklyn, to photograph the campaign for its Burberry Brit fragrance.
7. Michael Kors: 8M
Michael Kors is a brand that has truly mastered the art of Instagram branding. Case in point: Their most-liked post of the past two months is a staged product shot of a leather backpack.
6. Prada: 8.6M
Prada keeps its followers engaged with highly detailed shots of its fun accessories, trippy inspirational videos, and, our personal favorite, portraits of new ambassador Eddie Redmayne.
5. Gucci: 9.1M
Thanks to Alessandro Michele’s playful touch, Gucci’s Instagram account is peppered with quirky details that will definitely compel a double tap.
4. Dolce & Gabbana: 9.5M
Even when they’re promoting a handbag shaped like a vintage ‘80s stereo, Dolce & Gabbana still manages to infuse a bit of Italian charm into each and every post. Espresso, anyone?
3. Dior: 10.4M
Between images of luxurious jewels and detail shots from the fashion house’s most intricate couture designs are photos of Mr. Christian Dior himself. Clearly, heritage is an important component of Dior’s image.
2. Louis Vuitton: 11.5M
Louis Vuitton puts its army of celebrity ambassadors to work in its campaigns, a strategy which has attracted quite a few followers thanks to faces like Selena Gomez (who is the most followed person on Instagram, with 85.3M followers) and Jaden Smith, who appear regularly.
1. Chanel: 13.1M
It’s not just Chanel’s A-list fans (including the Fanning sisters, Chloe Sevigny, Blake Lively and ambassadors Kristen Stewart and Lily-Rose Depp) that have drawn nearly 13.1M followers to the brand’s account. Some of Chanel’s most-liked photos are actually from the brand’s travels — be it Cuba, where Karl Lagerfeld showed the 2017 resort collection, or Beijing, where he showed the Metiers d’Arte collection.
