Is Outfit Repeating the New Trend?

On Sunday night Sarah Silverman posted a tweet that read, “SCANDAL! I bought it on amazon, I like it, it’s easy, and I’ve worn it WAY more than 3 times.” The comedian was referring to a floral dress that the Daily Mail called her out for wearing in an article posted in May (the headline read, “Sarah Silverman dons same floral LBD for the THIRD time in a month on Late Night“).

Silverman isn’t the only one in the limelight to re-wear an ensemble lately; just last month Meryl Streep spoke at the Democratic National Convention in a Catherine Malandrino American flag-print dress — an item she first wore in January 2009 for the Doubt photo call in Paris.

This begs the age-old question: Is repeating an outfit a fashion faux pas? Let’s be real, for most of us wearing the same thing multiple times is an every day reality. But on the public stage (and in the disposable fashion-crazy, Instagram age), not so much. Attitudes could be changing though, thanks to a few, truly modern women.

First Lady (and style icon) Michelle Obama is all about looking chic while remaining eco-responsible. The FLOTUS hasn’t just repeated one or two dresses during her time in the White House — she’s recycled a handful of looks. The Thom Browne lace dress — which she first wore at the final presidential debate at Florida’s Lynn University (seen below, left) and the Democratic National Convention in North Carolina in 2012 — is just one of many repeats.

Kate Middleton is constantly re-wearing what’s in her closet too, including an ivory Roland Mouret gown that she wore in 2012 for a private dinner and then again a year later for the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom premiere, as well as an emerald green wrap DVF dress that she donned at the British Consul-General’s residence on July 8, 2011, and then again on the Royal Yacht Britannia on July 29, 2011.

Seeing these group of high-profile women — who clearly have a lot of influence (look no further than Middleton’s ability to sell out dresses) — recycle their wardrobe not only makes them more relatable, but also conveys the message that it’s totally OK and normal to wear your favorite looks over and over again.

If anything, just pair it with a different accessory.
