“The beauty looks you see on our runway are always strong and provocative with a hint of sensuality,” says Prabal Gurung, who has worked hand-in-hand with MAC Cosmetics since the launch of his eponymous ready-to-wear line in 2009. Now the relationship enters new territory with the first collaboration between the ready-to-wear designer and the makeup brand, which makes its debut in MAC Cosmetics boutiques on Nov. 26.
“Beauty is a very natural extension of what our brand already stands for. I always have the world of the woman I design for in mind — whether from beauty to sportswear, menswear to home,” says New York-based Gurung of the 14-piece collection.
Crediting the likes of Sylvie Fleury, Damien Hirst and Nick Knight as sources of artistic inspiration for the elegant gilded packaging, Gurung also drew upon memories of his mother and her beauty compacts when assembling the collection, which has been two years in the making.
“I still remember my mother’s vanity case, and how she would come back from work and sit in front the mirror to get ready. To this day I think of how that quiet, focused, transformative moment is so powerful for a woman,” says Gurung. So it’s no surprise that the red lipstick shade his mother wore not only taught Gurung an important lesson in color, but was also reinterpreted as Guring’s punchy new Carmine Rouge matte red lipstick shade ($30).
Other standout items in the glamorous collection include a rich black Feline Power Eye Pencil ($20) and the smoky gray and charcoal Cinder eye-shadow duo ($40) — just a few of the pieces that easily transition from day to night.
As to which Hollywood icon Gurung might hope to see flaunting his new shades? “There are many of them. If I had to choose one at the moment it would be Rooney Mara,” he says. “She always looks flawless and entirely effortless, while maintaining a subtle boldness that gives her that confident edge.”
