Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala will headline Coachella 2019 — but there’s one name in the lineup that had Avengers fans doing a double-take. Idris Elba, who plays Heimdall in the Marvel franchise, will perform on April 13 and 20 in Indio, Calif. after working as a DJ and producer since he was a teen.
In the eyes of his daughter, Isan Elba, it’s a “super exciting” gig, she told The Hollywood Reporter at Thursday’s HFPA Luncheon, where she spoke as the 2019 Golden Globe Ambassador.
“I texted him and I was like, ‘Congratulations!’ I was like, ‘I’m so excited’ just like, you know, hinting that I want to come,” she said (she has never attended the fest). “We were supposed to go last year for Beychella, but we couldn’t go because of my dad’s conflicting schedule.” She’s hopeful that, school pending, she can go.
“I mean, Coachella! That’s insane,” Elba added. So is this the ultimate cool dad moment? “I mean the Met Gala, I would love to go. I think Anna [Wintour] said I could go when I’m 18. So maybe 2020 you might see me, but Coachella and Met Gala, I don’t know. Those two definitely [are the most cool].”
Idris Elba, who was named People‘s sexiest man of the year, took to Twitter to say “See you in the desert” in reaction to the lineup announcement on Wednesday. He’s already performed at Glastonbury and Creamfields music festivals in the U.K., and pumped up the crowd at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding reception in May 2018.
