Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, 40, separated from Tobey Maguire, 42, after nine years of marriage last October, but she remains super friendly with her former flame, with whom she has two children, daughter Ruby, 10, and son Otis, 8.
“I don’t know what I would do without him — Tobey’s my best friend,” Meyer tells THR. “I lucked out in the biggest of ways. He’s still very sweet to me.” In May, the Spider-Man actor asked Meyer what she wanted for Mother’s Day. Her wish? Three hours alone to cozy up in bed and watch Big Little Lies. “He was like, ‘That’s it — that’s all you want?’ and I was like, ‘Yep.’ I wanted brunch and a big dinner with our kids, but some binge-watching in between,” laughs Meyer.
“I haven’t watched a show since Sex and the City, but I love Reese [Witherspoon] and she’s a great friend, so I wanted to see it,” adds Meyer, who viewed only the final three episodes of Breaking Bad on a flight home from Europe to know what happened (“I couldn’t take hearing about it anymore”). Of the Witherspoon- and Nicole Kidman-led HBO drama she says: “I fell in love with the show so hard — all the girls were amazing.”
Meyer, the daughter of NBCUniversal vice chairman Ron Meyer, says her next scheduled programming will be the untitled Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston series about TV morning shows. “Reese and Jen — yes, please! I won’t watch anything until that comes out,” she says.
Meyer, who landed on THR’s fourth annual Top 20 Red Carpet Designers list and appears alongside Aniston on one of the covers, credits Maguire with her foray into jewelry. More than a decade ago, she confessed to her then-beau that she wanted to try designing jewelry. “He used a Star Wars quote — ‘There is no try, only do’ — and that got to me.”
