John Galliano’s signature collection was shown Sunday in Paris despite the recent controversy surrounding the designer.
Eric Wilson of the New York Times‘ On the Runway blog reports that the atmosphere at the event was “somewhat surreal” following Galliano’s being fired from Dior last after making anti-Semitic statements. The designer also faces trial in France.
Editors arrived at Sunday’s show expecting an informal presentation but were surprised to discover that “seats had been scattered around for a slightly more formal showing on models.”
The clothes, according to Wilson, were “typically Galliano” and “gave no hint about the mood of the house, but the music selection suggested a sense of loss: Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ which includes the line “’We could have had it all,’ and, at the finale, the opening of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida,’ which begins with ‘I used to rule the world.'”
Sidney Toledano, CEO of Dior, which also invests in Galliano’s brand, was helping out at the event, “perhaps a signal of support” for the behind-the-scenes staff, the Times wrote.
At Dior’s fashion presentation Friday, Toledano opened up about the controversy.
“What has happened over the last week has been a terrible and wrenching ordeal us all,” he told an audience of about 1,000. “It has been deeply painful to see the Dior name associated with the disgraceful statements attributed to its designer, however brilliant he may be.”
