Five years ago, Julia Roberts walked the red carpet outside the Palais in Cannes alongside George Clooney and Jodie Foster for the premiere of the Foster-directed Money Monster. The Oscar-winning actress, in her festival debut, broke protocol by gliding up the famed steps barefoot while wearing an Armani Privé black gown accessorized with something that also turned heads — a Chopard necklace of white diamonds and an emerald drop pendant.
Roberts is furthering her relationship with Chopard as it’s just been announced that she is fronting the luxury jeweler’s new campaign for its Happy Sport watch collection. “Chopard is such an iconic brand and all of the watches are gorgeous,” Roberts tells The Hollywood Reporter. “The Happy Sport is no exception and what a nice thing to be aligned with happiness.”
Per Chopard, the Happy Sport line launched in 1993 and was the first watch to combine diamonds with a stainless steel case. Caroline Scheufele, co-president and artistic director of Chopard, says Roberts was the first choice for the campaign, telling WWD that the role extends to “ambassadress.” In a statement, she says, “Julia Roberts was the only person I felt could convey the spirit that I see in Happy Sport.”
Roberts will appear in billboards, digital and editorial advertisements as well as star in short videos directed by Xavier Dolan and styled by her longtime stylist Elizabeth Stewart. Dolan, a Cannes favorite, also art directed the print shots in collaboration with photographer Shayne Laverdière.
The campaign was shot over two days and proved to be a memorable experience for Roberts. “It was such fun,” she says of the shoot. “I was so thrilled coming into a new group of people with how quickly and easily we all formed a connection.”
As far as picking a favorite from the Happy Sport line? Not so fast. “It is too hard to pick as they are all fabulous,” Roberts explains, adding that she has worn many Chopard pieces over the years. “But the necklace I wore at Cannes in 2016 was a heart-stopper.”
It would not be a surprise to see Roberts in Cannes this summer, as many of the luxury jeweler’s friends and ambassadors make official appearances at the fest, at which Chopard has served as an official partner since 1998. Cannes is set for July.
