Karl Lagerfeld shocked music fans this week by referring to Grammy Award-winning singer Adele as “too fat,” and now the outspoken Chanel designer has issued a head-scratching apology.

Speaking once again with Metro — to whom he previously described the singer as “a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice” — Lagerfeld offered a statement of apology, while shifting the focus to another controversial crooner.
“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer,” he began. “Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article, it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published.”
“I actually prefer Adele,” he continued. “She is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regard to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”

The context of Lagerfeld’s original statement remains unclear, though based on his apology, it doesn’t seem to flatter Del Rey.
The controversial statements bring to light — once again — the pressures to stay thin in the entertainment industry. Adele recently addressed the subject in the U.K. edition of Marie Claire.
“I’ve never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines. I represent the majority of women and I’m very proud of that,” she said. “I’d lose weight if I was an actress and had to play a role where you’re supposed to be 40 pounds lighter, but weight has nothing to do with my career.”
Adele will make her big post-surgery debut on Sunday at the Grammy Awards, where she will perform live.
