Katy Perry’s elaborate Maison Margiela ensemble at the Met Gala, held earlier in May, was more than just a wild interpretation of the evening’s avant-garde dress code.
Worn over a ruffled biker jacket/gown hybrid, Perry’s red veil bore the name of her forthcoming album, Witness. The word was almost illegible in a curvy black script — part of which had been drawn into an eyeball — and was almost obscured by the spacey glass accoutrements that completed the over-the-top headpiece.
At the time, most believed the phrase to be an ambiguous statement by the singer, perhaps another (more subtle) political statement, like the “Persist” armband she wore while performing at the 2017 Grammys.
The “Bon Apetit” singer revealed the name of her album as well as the release date and tour schedule Monday morning, and it wasn’t long before fans made the connection to her Met Gala look. A release for the singer’s fourth album states that Witness “reflects on the changes in her own life and in the world around her, delivering songs that both challenge and inspire.”
