How does Victoria’s Secret Angel Lily Aldridge arrive at the fashion industry’s equivalent of the Oscars? In a party bus, naturally.
“Because the fabric was heavy silk that could wrinkle quite easily and the train was so long, three of us held up her train while she stood on the party bus from The Carlyle Hotel to The Met,” says stylist Meredith Melling of styling duo La Marque.
For the 71st annual event, Aldridge wore an elegant optic white gown with striking cutouts and a circular cape which was custom-made by Ralph Lauren. The original prototype of the dress was a purple version from his most recent ready-to-wear collection.
In a nod to the event’s avant-garde theme, Melling and styling partner Valerie Boster selected more over-the-top accessories. Aldridge’s thigh-high red boots were purchased from the Balenciaga boutique in Soho and her striking fuchsia veil was custom-made by her right-hand hairstylist Bryce Scarlett.
“A common theme in a lot of Comme des Garcons’ collections is tulle. We had every color in the hotel room, but within the last hour we decided to go with a bright color [fuchsia] and Quinn Murphy kept her makeup palette neutral.” Scarlett added that because he, Murphy and the La Marque ladies have all collaborated together on the model’s last four Met Gala looks, they’ve developed an “unspoken language” that enables them to “work really well together.”
Finishing off Aldridge’s look was a set of Bulgari diamond earrings and bracelet, along with a Lee Savage clutch.
