“I think whenever the theme for the Met Ball is released, every makeup artist and hairdresser in the world gets super excited because it is an opportunity to get a little more avant garde and to be a little more creative,” says makeup artist Kate Lee. “But like any red-carpet event, you have to do what’s right for the dress so someone feels beautiful.”
So when it came to working with Lily-Rose Depp for the closely watched fashion affair in New York on Monday night, Lee opted for a loose interpretation of the Commes Des Garcons theme.
“I chose to take my inspiration from [designer Rei Kawakubo’s] almost disregard for beauty,” she explains. “I wanted it to be very strong, but I thought taking [the theme] literally might be the wrong way — I decided not to do displaced lips half-way up the cheek,” adds Lee, referencing one of Kawakubo’s more wild past runway looks.
Instead, the makeup artist landed on a dramatic “double cat eye” for the Chanel-clad Depp — a wink to the graphic elements of Kawakubo’s designs of the late ’80s and early ’90s.
To achieve the look, Lee first lined the upper and lower waterlines in Chanel Stylo Yeux Long Lasting Waterproof Eyeliner in Noir Intense, before using Chanel Calligraphie de Chanel Longwear Intense Cream Eyeliner in Hyperblack and the Pinceau Lèvres Biseauté Angled Lip Brush to build out the angular shape, sharply pointed in each corner of the eye.
Lee completed the effect with a coat of Chanel Inimitable Waterproof Mascara in Noir on the upper lashes only — “I didn’t want to detract from the hard, sharp line at the bottom,” says Lee. “I just wanted to keep it as a graphic black line.”
Lee rounded out the look with a few finishing touches, including a swipe of Depp’s own Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Catherine.
