Lola Kirke has a message for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
When she stepped out Sunday at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, the Mozart in the Jungle actress accessorized her floral pink Andrew Gn gown with a dainty matching button reading “F— Paul Ryan.” The actress wore a hot pink version of the same pin during Saturday’s BAFTA Tea Party.
“Paul Ryan is talking about defunding Planned Parenthood,” the actress told Elle.com of her accessory. “I think that, along with a number of other decisions that are being talked about being made by the new administration, is atrocious. As a person with a platform, no matter what size it is, I think it’s important to share your views and maybe elevate people that might agree with you, that maybe won’t feel like they can have the same voice. My body my choice, your body your choice.”
Kirke (younger sister of Girls actress Jemima Kirke) added that the pins were custom made. “My stylist [Susan Winget] and her son made them for me,” she said. “They made me one in the Planned Parenthood colors yesterday that I was wearing. I’m sure there will be other issues to support, but this one is really important.”
On Instagram on Friday, the actress posted a call to action asking constituents to “tell Speaker Ryan that you’re part of the overwhelming majority that opposes defunding care at Planned Parenthood.” Lena Dunham, as well as celebrity stylists Karla Welch and Penny Lovell, are among the Hollywood elite asking the public to stand up for the women’s health organization.

Though much of Hollywood was vocally anti-Trump throughout the election cycle, Kirke was the only celebrity to make a sartorial political statement at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday afternoon. However, while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Meryl Streep took aim at President-elect Donald Trump.
“We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage,” she said of the press’ responsibility during the Trump administration. “We’re going to need them going forward, and they’re going to need us to safeguard the truth.”
The red carpet has historically been used as a platform for political statements, with stars like Helen Mirren, Susan Sarandon and Ryan Gosling spreading the word for various causes. Time will tell if more celebrities will take a stance this awards season, especially with Trump’s inauguration just around the corner on Jan. 20.
