A West Hollywood Sheriff Department spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that a dress has been recovered but couldn’t confirm it was Nyong’o’s. Police are still working to verify it’s the actual dress that went missing. “Detectives will work with the owners of the dress, to confirm if that is the dress. At this time no one has been arrested and the investigation is still ongoing,” the Sheriff Department said in a release.
The pearl-embellished dress was stolen on Tuesday afternoon from The London West Hollywood hotel while the actress was out. On Friday, TMZ reports that the thief called the news site to say the famous frock could be found inside a trash bag underneath a second-floor bathroom near the fitness center. TMZ says the recovered dress is the one that went missing.
While it’s been reported that the dress was worth $150K, the robber reportedly said he and his partners in crime removed two pearls from the dress and took them to downtown L.A.’s garment district to see if they were real. According to TMZ, they were told the pearls were fake. As a result, the thief told the website that the dress was returned so the world knows “Hollywood’s fake bullshit.” Oy, someone sounds angry.
The West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station held a press conference at 6 p.m. on Friday evening to discuss details of the case.
