Ahead of National Polka Dot Day (Sunday, Jan. 22), Minnie Mouse is bringing back Rock the Dots — a collection of art and fashion launched by Disney in 2016 — celebrating iconic imagery of Minnie Mouse with top designers and artists, all in an effort to find creative ways to reimagine Minnie’s style.
Since 1928, Minnie has starred in more than 70 Disney films and has more than 200 dresses in her wardrobe — so it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about fashion. The ultrastylish mouse has inspired countless fashion collections by designers including Lanvin, Comme des Garcons, Kate Spade and Christian Siriano.
Minnie’s excellent taste was on display Jan. 17 at an exclusive dinner in Beverly Hills feting her latest collaboration with French designer Olympia Le-Tan and fast-fashion giant Uniqlo, as well as her new fashion portraits shot by L.A.-based photographer Gray Malin.
Disney partnered with Malin, who launched his namesake brand in 2013, to take a series of photographs and a short video clip for Rock the Dots. “Similar to Minnie Mouse, my artwork aims to be timeless and bring joy to all who experience it,” said Malin.
Malin’s two horizontal and vertical portraits ($299 to $4,000-plus) were unveiled at Rock the Dots’ dinner, a black-tie affair at the Andaz West Hollywood. The images are a perfect marriage of the magic of Disney and Malin’s signature overhead photographic style.
Last December, Pret-a-Reporter went behind-the-scenes and watched Malin in action, shooting Minnie (high above in the ceiling rafters) at a film studio in Manhattan Beach, along with choreographed dancers and twirling parasols. “Working with Minnie was an absolute pleasure,” Malin told Pret-a-Reporter, “she is a consummate professional and always ready with a smile for anyone on set. I give her a 10++!”
Also debuted at Rock the Dots’ Dinner: Olympia Le-Tan’s “Minnie Mouse Loves Dots” collaboration with Uniqlo — a collection that will be available in stores and online this spring. The collection marks Le-Tan’s second time teaming up with Uniqlo: “I like the quality of the brand’s fabrics — affordable, not fussy, with simple clean designs,” said Le-Tan. “I decided that this story would be about how Minnie came to have dots on her dress.”
Minnie was an adorably chic dinner co-hostess — along with Malin and Le-Tan — in a custom, blue-sequin Olympia Le-Tan dress. “I chose blue because that was the color of Minnie’s very first dress,” Le-Tan explained of the look, which featured 53 custom-appliqued polka dots. “The sequins are because we’re in L.A., and that calls for some extra sparkle.”
