Jessica Liebeskind knows a thing or two about launching makeup lines. Since her time as a theatre major at Syracuse University, where she created Dramatic Designs in 1995 (“the first cosmetics company created by the college student for the college student,” she says proudly), the Calabasas native earned the well-deserved moniker of “the makeup lady.”
In 2000, following a serendipitous encounter with Bobbi Brown (at a Nordstrom makeup counter, no less) Liebeskind landed at the makeup maven’s eponymous line as a global product developer, working closely with Brown on some of the brand’s best-sellers, including the award-winning Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner and the Shimmer Brick Compact. Now, she continues her winning streak with the debut of Vintage by Jessica Liebeskind — a stylish and practical 15-piece line designed that launched on HSN in early January — and is already selling out quickly.
“First and foremost, Vintage is about how quality and sophistication never go out of style,” says New York-based Liebeskind, who began envisioning the line two years ago. “When you see starlets on the red carpet being asked who they wearing, they often say Vintage Halston, Chanel or Dior; the gowns are just as modern, beautiful and wearable today as when they were first made. I wanted to create a cosmetics collection that would stand that same test of time,” she notes.
BRAINS AND BEAUTY: Jessica Liebeskind
The line is not only a culmination of Liebeskind’s 20 year-background in the industry, but also a lifelong obsession with cosmetics, which she traces back to her childhood spent growing up in Calabasas. “This was California in the ’80s … it was about real glamour,” she laughs. “Big hair, long nails, four shades of shadow on the eyes. I was totally mesmerized as I watched the glamorous makeup artists make up the glamorous women.”
Standouts from the line include the ultra-hydrating Velvet Lip Crayons ($22) which deliver a smooth, matte finish in three different colors, and the popular Blush and Brighten Face Palettes ($28), which feature two shades including a subtle, everyday go-to hue, and a more vibrant pop of color. “I think that women in general are overwhelmed by choice,” notes Liebeskind. “They really just want products that instantly make them look amazing without spending a lot of money. So I’ve solved those problems. The Vintage collection is tightly edited, easy to use, sophisticated and luxurious.”
