New York Fashion Week will not be returning to Lincoln Center after February. According to the terms of a settlement reached between the city and park advocates, NYFW will be forced to find a new location, reports the New York Post.
Back in September, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed with IMG’s Catherine Bennett that the runway shows would be relocating. “We have one more season in Lincoln Center, and then we move. For September 2015, we will be somewhere new. We are focusing our efforts on having September 2015 be a kind of reinvention of New York Fashion Week,” Bennett told THR.
Per the ruling, the fashion extravaganza will not be allowed to renew its contract with Lincoln Center, which would have let Fashion Week utilize that venue until 2020. The decision comes after New York City Park Advocates alleged that event organizers were setting up tents and equipment that damaged the environment at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, which is owned by the city but maintained and operated by Lincoln Center Performing Arts.
The settlement states that IMG Fashion Week violated its use of Lincoln Center for nonpark purposes and “shall vacate the premises and remove all tents and other Fashion Week equipment from the park.”
“The City and LCPA intend to further expand public access to the Park by not entering into agreements for commercial events [similar to] Fashion Week,” state the court documents.
“Lincoln Center has been a great home for the past five years and we look forward to another world-class season this February,” an IMG spokesperson said in a statement via email. “However, as the fashion industry continues to evolve, IMG has been actively looking for a new home for NYFW that gives our designers and partners the best possible environment to share their creative visions. We look forward to sharing more details on our new home soon.”
NYFW has been held at Lincoln Center since 2010, when it relocated there from Bryant Park. So, where is it going next? We’ll have to wait and see.
