So far, the biggest young celeb we’ve seen at New York Fashion Week has been Hailee Steinfeld, who made the scene at Erin Featherson, Rag & Bone, Peter Som and sat front row with Kate Bosworth at Prabal Gurung on Saturday morning – wearing Prabal’s new white Victorian blouse with lace shoulders and printed shorts from the just-shown collection.
The actress was dressed very differently for each show she attended, and not just in that designer’s particular look. She also changed her hair and makeup to be appropriate with every outfit – or some stylist did. Either way, she’s showing a keen eye for great visuals. We saw the beginnings of that when she got many nominations for her role in True Grit with Jeff Bridges.
At Erin Featherston, she wore a delicate 1920’s style silver sequin drop waist dress, and at Peter Som, a lovely blue lace dress (blue and lace both being big fall trends). At Prabal, she worked a new spring eclectic look, innocent and sharp at the same time. Of course, she helped put the Nepalese designer on the map when she wore his white halter dress to the Golden Globes two years ago. Gurung admits that brought several stores to him, then buying his collections.
But it almost didn’t happen. Right before Gurung’s show at Pier 57 on Saturday morning, Steinfeld, accompanied by her mom, told THR about the now famed Golden Globe white halter gown, “I was working with stylist Karla Welch for the Globes, and we had one dress all picked out, ready to go. But she had a rack of other dresses, so I thought I’d try them on for the heck of it. I didn’t love any of them, and there was only one left, and I was tired, but my mom said, ‘Why not just throw it on just to see? It can’t hurt.” That turned out to be Prabal’s white gown (Anne Hathaway recently wore a white gown of his to a Dark Knight premiere) – and the rest is awards season fashion history.
Steinfeld has a number of movies in the can – a new version of Romeo and Juliet (in which Damian Lewis has a role), Can a Song Save Your Life (with Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley), and a comedy called Why We Broke Up.
