Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig are a Hollywood red carpet force to be reckoned with — Olivia Wilde, Blake Lively, Rachel McAdams, Naomi Watts, Jennifer Lawrence, Sofia Vergara and Sandra Bullock have all worn the pair’s gowns to major movie premieres and award shows. Stylists count on the duo to deliver wow-worthy dresses each season that will land their clients on every best-dressed list.
For spring 2013, the designers chose an over-the-top setting in Grand Central Station’s Vanderbilt Hall and a celebrity-packed front row (including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West) to deliver some insanely elaborate Bollywood-esque cocktail dresses and evening gowns. The styles shown definitely got the crowd’s attention.
Chapman and Craig, who were inspired by “the spirit of India in the 1960s,” used traditional Indian techniques — sari weaves and hand embroidery — along with bright paisleys, floral brocades and fringe and lively colors (chartreuse, hot pink, coral and teal). The looks — some a tad too literal — aren’t for the red carpet faint of heart, but it gets boring when everyone plays it safe and wears the same strapless black dress.
We adored the swingy garnet-hued gown with tiered tassel fringe and a glittery illusion neckline. It would be fun to see someone like Mad Men’s Jessica Pare or New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel wear it on Emmy night. It would definitely keep the red carpet parade from being a snooze fest.
