Gucci Westman, bestie of Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz, wife of Rag & Bone’s David Neville and makeup artist to Gwyneth Paltrow and Drew Barrymore, has proved time and again that she’s one of the best in the world at what she does. Which means when she declares that heavy makeup is over, we’d do well to listen to her.
Kylie Jenner might benefit from listening up, too (but that’s our opinion). Because this makeup maven — who created a covetable graphic liner look for the Self-Portrait show at NYFW on Saturday to go with cool asymmetrical fringe by Bumble and Bumble’s Jimmy Paul — tells Pret-a-Reporter she feels like “the days of having a full face of makeup and powder and foundation are just not really relevant.”
Indeed, the Self-Portrait look used minimal Shiseido products — not even mascara. And she hasn’t used anything on models’ lashes at any of her tests for other shows either. “Mascara feels too fussy and pretty sometimes. It’s less cool and takes too much effort. Nobody wants to look like they made any effort, they just want to look awesome,” Westman says, pausing before adding “for selfies.”
In fact, she is of the mind that celebrities should start taking cues from the mascara-less runways and tone it down a bit on red carpets. “That would be so much cooler,” says Westman. “I feel like some girls do [it] — they’re more bold with their fashion risks and those are the ones you remember a little bit because they don’t just blend in with the normal.” And “normal” seems to now be lots of contouring and false lashes.
The beauty star continues, “What you expect to see is so polished, but it would be so refreshing to see just a slicked back ponytail and a fresh face [on the red carpet].” Fortunately it’s not that much of a stretch for some. Westman calls out Jennifer Connelly, Marion Cotillard and Michelle Williams as a few stars she’s confident can pull it off. We say go for it, ladies!
