Who needs New York Fashion Week when you’ve got the New York City Ballet?
Opening Ceremony co-founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon are ditching their time slot on the NYFW calendar in favor of a presentation in collaboration with the New York City Ballet and choreographer Justin Peck. The designers also teamed up with Peck in 2015 when he choreographed a dance number for their spring 2016 collection.
On Jan. 28, a little over a week before NYFW kicks off, the brand will host a “unique evening” at the ballet, featuring dancers outfitted in sneakers rather than slippers, as well as streetwear ensembles conceived by Peck and Leon. According to a release, the looks inspired the forthcoming spring 2017 collection, which will hit stores and select retailers one day later, Jan. 29. The brand began showing in-season collections last fall.
The designers are no stranger to “unique” presentations. Last September, Lim and Leon forwent a traditional runway, instead inviting an A-list roster of comedians and actors — Whoopi Goldberg, Rashida Jones, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein included — for an evening of political discussion.
Opening Ceremony is just one of a growing number of brands trading NYFW for something a little different. Tommy Hilfiger will host a presentation in L.A.’s sunny Venice Beach a day before fashion week kicks off, and Rebecca Minkoff will present her collection in Los Angeles at The Grove shopping center.
